General Description
Serves as the Deputy to the Executive Director of the Texas Access to Justice Commission (Commission) and the State Bar of Texas Legal Access Department (LAD). As directed by the Executive Director, the Deputy assists in implementing plans of the Commission and policies adopted by the Commission and assists in the work and projects of LAD. Coordinates as directed with the access to justice community stakeholders across Texas to support the Commission’s and LAD’s efforts, particularly regarding pro bono efforts. Assists in supervising and training staff. Reports directly to the Executive Director of the Commission and LAD.
Primary Functions
As directed by the Executive Director, the Deputy Executive Director assists in:
- Overseeing pro bono efforts and LAD projects to initiate, improve, promote, and support access to justice.
- Communicating and coordinating with legal service providers and other interested parties to promote and support access to justice for low-income Texans.
- Working with the Executive Director to support the needs and directives of the Commission and the State Bar including assisting in the development of policies, goals, and priorities for access to justice efforts, to promote the availability of legal services to the poor.
- Preparing articles, reports, etc. regarding all aspects of providing access to justice for low-income Texans and regarding LAD activities as directed.
- Supporting the Executive Director in providing and supervising staff and in evaluating needs as directed regarding the work of the Commission and LAD and their committees.
- Coordinating with other State Bar departments and related entities to promote and support pro bono legal services for the poor activities as directed.
- Performs other activities as required.
Position Requirements
Requires a Texas law license with a minimum of five years of experience in working with access to justice issues or legal services to low-income individuals. Requires demonstrated skills in management and leadership. Must have the ability to build productive professional relationships with staff, Commissioners and volunteers, and State Bar leadership. Requires strong oral and written communication, including public speaking, analytical and problem-solving skills; proven ability to maintain confidentiality; able to work both independently on assigned projects and as a team member. Requires outstanding staff support skills. Experience with coordination with stakeholders preferred. Some travel required.

The State Bar of Texas is an agency of the judiciary under the administrative control of the Texas Supreme Court. The Texas Bar is responsible for assisting the Texas Supreme Court in overseeing all attorneys licensed to practice law in Texas. The State Bar is the second largest state bar association in terms of active attorney members in the United States. The State Bar Act, adopted by the Legislature in 1939, mandates that all attorneys licensed to practice law in Texas be members of the State Bar.
